The Plinth

Abhivyakti Festival, Ahmedabad

February 2020

This work is a response to a European looking classical plinth - a ‘pedestal’- similar to what you see in public spaces on which a sculpture is usually placed. This faux-classical plinth tucked away in a corner at the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat in Ahmedabad slowly evolves into an anti-monument. The absence of a sculpture motivates the viewers to become sculptures for the amount of time they spend on the plinth. The plinth is both the protagonist and antagonist in this work. This work plays with the conventional wisdom that anything put on a pedestal seems worthy of attention. During the course of the Abhivyakti Arts festival, unannounced, impromptu, improvised, and spontaneous incidences were performed on and around the plinth.
