Studio Brief
For this design studio, we will make the book POETICS OF SPACE by Gaston Bachelard as a marker like
a north star guiding seafarers and explorers into unchartered territories, Bachelard’s words in this book
will be a stable marker that will help us ruminate and meditate on different meanings of Home.
Bachelard writes, “the house shelters daydreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one
to dream in peace, — House is one of the greatest powers of integration for the thoughts, memories and
dreams of mankind”
As designers, artists, creative individuals we are poets at heart. How can we design without romanticizing
about space ? The fact is poetry doesn’t exist in the books in the library. Poetry is in the journey of
reading the book. You change as a person in that journey. Poetry is the encounter of the reader with the
book, the discovery of the book. For us Gaston Bachelard’s writings will lead us into a poetic journey of
discovery of Home.
Through the semester we want to embark on a journey to inquire about the relationship between our
intimate lives and the spaces we inhabit.
How do we appreciate design practices rooted in poetry and literature ?
What does it mean to design a Home, a personal space, a refuge, a shelter, a nest ?
How do we design personal spaces ridden with memories and dreams ?
How do we design meaningful intimate spaces ?
How do we decode text into visual narrative about home ?
How do we visualize and communicate meaningful and poetic habitat spaces ?
